Hicks' U-19 Liverpool squad reaches finals
Flynn scores late goal for 2-1 win to set up matchup with Tigres02:04 AM CDT on Saturday, March 22, 2008
FRISCO – Somewhere, Tom Hicks must be smiling.
Hicks, owner of the Stars and Rangers, hasn't celebrated a championship in Dallas since winning the Stanley Cup in 1999. That could change – sort of.
Hick's other team, Liverpool (U-19), advanced to Sunday's Super Group finals of the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXIX with a late goal in the 2-1 win over Portugal's Benfica.
Hicks was not in attendance, but his son, Tom Hicks Jr., was.
Liverpool will face Tigres at 3 p.m. at Pizza Hut Park. Time Warner digital cable customers can watch the championship match at 9 p.m. on channel 185.
With the score tied, 1-1, Ryan Flynn scored the winning goal for Liverpool in the 87th minute off a cross from Kriszitan Nememi.
Andras Simon took advantage of Benfica goalkeeper's bobble to score the first goal in the 35th minute.
But Benfica struck back in the second half. David Simao scored from 30 yards away in the 61st minute. Boti Demel almost did the same from outside the box a few minutes later, but his shot bounced off the right post.
Liverpool turned the game around late and became more aggressive on offense. Benfica couldn't hold Liverppol off, and Nememi escaped on the left side, setting up Flynn's winning goal.
Liverpool defeated Tigres in group play, 5-1, on Monday, but the Mexican squad still advanced to the next round as a wildcard with a 2-1-0 record.
Tigres defeated fellow Mexican rival CF Monterrey, 2-0, in the first semifinal. Israel Jimenez scored on the 18th minute, and Arturo Garcia added a second in the 85th.
"We want Liverpool," said Tigres midfielder Antonio Zacarias. "We have something to prove."
Flores' first penalty kick a winner: Defender Isaac Flores had never attempted a penalty kick until Wednesday.
The 16-year-old from Rowlett scored the winning goal on a penalty shootout that advanced River Plate USA to the U-16 semifinals and broke a 1-1 tie against Pennsylvania's Lower Marion Velez.
Flores said he was hoping it wouldn't come to his turn. He admitted he was shaking. He walked slowly to the box with his head down.
"I was praying to God it would go in," Flores said.
Solar FC loses in quarterfinals: The ideal all-area U-19 finals between Solar SC and the Dallas Texans Red won't happen in this year's Dallas Cup.
A matchup between two of the most prominent local soccer clubs appeared to be a possibility after both teams jumped to a lead in the first half of their quarterfinals games.
But Solar SC gave up a goal in the second half and another on a penalty kick in the first half of overtime to lose, 2-1, to IMG Soccer Academy.
The Dallas Texans Red advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over England's Knowsley Youth. Arturo Ivo, Jarod Stiegel and Jared Jeffrey scored for the Texans.
The Texans will face the Houston Dynamo's U-19 squad at 10 a.m. today at the Pizza Hut Park soccer complex.
Four area teams remain: Only four area teams remained at the Dallas Cup as the semifinals begin today.
The U-14 Solar SC, the U-16 Texans Red, the U-16 River Plate and the U-19 Texans Red stayed alive in the competition. A year ago, five area teams made it to the semifinals but none were able to claim a title.
