License discount offered in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is offering that state's sportsmen a five-year hunting and/or fishing license that offers a 30 percent savings over the cost of buying a license each year for five years.

An Oklahoma annual hunting or fishing license costs $25. The five-year hunting or fishing license costs $88, or a combination five-year hunting and fishing license is available for $148. Sportsmen are still required to buy applicable annual permits.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners in May approved a 5 percent license fee increase that will make new Texas hunting licenses that go on sale in August increase from $23 to $25. Freshwater fishing licenses will cost $30, and saltwater fishing licenses will cost $35. The cost of a Texas Super Combo all-inclusive hunting and fishing license will increase from $64 to $68.

Mineola bass pro climbing once again

Mineola bass pro Kelly Jordon may have salvaged a seesaw Bassmaster Elite Series season with a second-place finish at the next to last regular-season event. It moved him up to seventh place in the Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.

Jordon started the season strong (13th place in the first tournament), then placed 45th, 86th and 48th in subsequent tournaments before bouncing back.

The top 12 pros will qualify for back-to-back Elite Series postseason tournaments in Alabama, with $200,000 going to the winner. The Elite Series regular season wraps up Aug. 13-16 at Oneida Lake, Syracuse, N.Y.

Duck stamps are unveiled

Federal and Junior Duck Stamps were unveiled this weekend at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Nashville, Tenn.

Last fall, a panel of five judges selected art painted by South Dakota's Joshua Spier from 277 entries. The Junior Duck Stamp art was submitted by Lily Spang, 16, of Toledo, Ohio.

Since 1934, the sale of federal duck stamps has raised more than $700 million for the acquisition and protection of more than 5.2 million acres of wetlands. All waterfowl hunters 16 and older are required to buy and carry a federal duck stamp. The $15 stamps are also popular with collectors.

A big save made in search effort

Paul Conner, a Maine Coast Guard search and rescue coordinator, used social networking to save the considerable expense of searching for a boater presumed missing.

Conner responded to a report of a lone vehicle and boat trailer left at a ramp parking lot. He traced the vehicle license number and located the owner's address and home phone number but received no answer.

Rather than calling out search vessels and aircraft, Conner performed an online search on Facebook and found the missing boater's cellphone number, which he called. It turns out the guy wasn't missing after all – he was simply moored at a different location. A search would have cost about $30,000.
