FORT WORTH – The Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show Rodeo took on an international flavor Sunday night.

As the 17-day rodeo at Will Rogers Coliseum came to a close, two of the seven events were won by contestants born outside the United States, and two other events had foreign-born contenders fighting to the end.

Evan Jayne, a native of Marseille, France, made the big splash. A local favorite now, he clinched the bareback riding championship for the second consecutive year with an outstanding performance of 84 points aboard Sammy Andrews' Roly Poly. His 400 points on five horses beat Jess Davis by six points.

In saddle bronc riding, Canada's Rod Hay, an 18-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Wildwood, Alberta, took advantage of his six-point lead coming into the finals to stave off Jake Griffin of Powell, Wyo., by one point for the championship.

Canadian Curtis Cassidy, who is better known as a steer wrestler, held the lead in tie-down roping for two weeks but missed his calf in the final round. As a consolation, the Donalda, Alberta, cowboy earned $11,001 in the two events for the week. That performance was just shy of the rodeo-best mark of $11,765 earned by steer wrestler Tooter Silver of Warner, Okla.

Clay Cerny of Brazoria, Texas, who was in second place, took advantage of Cassidy's mishap, and finished with the tie-down roping title. Cerny roped his calf in 9.5 seconds, which tied for third in the short round, but was good enough to hold off Mike Johnson by eight-tenths of a second. Johnson won the short round in 8.9 seconds.

In steer wrestling, Tanner Milan of Cochrane, Alberta, suffered a similar heartbreaking finish when he missed his steer after having been tied for the lead with Rodney Burks coming into the final round.

That miss came just after Burks broke the barrier, opening the field for Silver to squeeze past Matt Reeves of Pampa, Texas, by a tenth of a second for the championship.

Other championships determined Sunday night were Matt Sherwood of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Randon Adams of Logandale, Nev., in team roping; Kelly Maben of Spur, Texas, in barrel racing; and Luke Haught of Weatherford in bull riding.

Jayne was overwhelmed with his second standout performance here, calling the Stock Show his rodeo.

"I just feel so comfortable in this arena," said Jayne, who lives close to Huntsville, Texas. "It's just like this is my event."

He said his Sunday night mount was really tough to ride, but the results turned out a lot better than his previous outing on her last October in Waco.

"She didn't do anything for me that time," he said.
