The puck drops on a new year

The Stars have made a tradition of hosting a New Year's Eve game every season since 1997 – and the team has produced some special games in that time. Here are the Stars' games on Dec. 31 since moving to Dallas in 1993:

, 5-2 win at Chicago: The two teams combined for 186 penalty minutes and started fighting after the opening drop of the puck. Dallas won the game, and many believe this is what propelled the team to a 42-29-13 season.

, 2-2 tie with Los Angeles: Former Hobey Baker Award winner Tony Hrkac had labored for parts of four seasons in the minors before he got his chance with the Stars. A recent call-up when Mike Modano suffered a knee injury, Hrkac scored two goals to help the Stars earn a point in the standings.

, 6-1 win over Boston: In the midst of their run for their first Presidents' Trophy, the Stars systematically destroyed a good Boston team and set a franchise record for unbeaten streak at 13. The old record was 12, set in 1982. Craig Ludwig scored a goal to break a 156-game drought.

, 5-4 win over Anaheim (The Hullennium): One of the most memorable regular-season games in Dallas history. Hull had been knocking on the door of 600 goals but couldn't get the key marker. Then, with the Stars losing 4-3, Hull scored twice to seal the win and get goals No. 600 and 601.

, 6-1 win over NY Rangers (Happy Nieuw Year): With the Stars struggling to find their pace after losing the Stanley Cup, this game gave the team momentum. Joe Nieuwendyk had a hat trick – his first in two seasons and the first by any Stars player in 10 months. Icy conditions outside cut the crowd size by a third.

, 2-1 win over Boston (The Marty Party): The Stars were in a funk and just didn't feel right in their first season at American Airlines Center. But Marty Turco stepped in and provided the first memorable game in the new barn. Turco had 26 saves and whipped the crowd into an audible frenzy.

, 4-1 win over Edmonton: Brenden Morrow had a goal, an assist and was plus-3 in the game, and Mike Modano added a goal. The Stars scored twice into an empty net in the final minute to make the score more lopsided than it should have been. Marty Turco was the first star again.

, 1-1 tie with Montreal: Turco was first star for the third time on New Year's Eve. Mike Modano had an assist. This game was much like the season – the Stars never really found the right mixture.

, Lockout

, 3-2 loss to Kings: The Stars were down 3-0, but rallied and outshot the Kings 17-1 in the third period. Mike Modano scored two power-play goals, but Mathieu Garon finally slammed the door shut for the Kings in the Stars' first loss on New Year's Eve since they moved to Dallas.
