As Rock grows, organizers thinking big

Cleaning out the notebook from the Wellstone's Dallas White Rock Marathon ...
Matthew Compton with Racing Systems said Sunday's three events drew 11,400 registrants, an increase of 11.5 percent from last year. The marathon had 3,867, the half marathon had 5,173 and the relay marathons had 2,360 participants.
Early numbers projected that the event might approach 14,000 participants. It turns out, said race director Marcus Grunewald, individuals registered earlier because all registration was electronic.
"It was way too early for 14,000, and that's not how we want to grow," board chairman Chuck Dannis said. "With our new venue, we wanted 10 to 20 percent growth this year and next."
Dannis said he and his board will work to correct a few glitches that occurred Sunday, then he plans to meet with city officials and the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau to market the Dec. 9, 2007, event nationally and internationally. Dannis said he would like to add an international flare to the event.
"It becomes much more than a 5-mile, 13-mile or 26-mile run," he said. "It becomes a life experience. The stories I have from all my races involved something about someone from a different country."
Other marathons can't keep pace: The men's marathon winner, Moses Kororia of Kenya (2 hours, 12 minutes, four seconds), and runner-up Evegni Bozhko, of the Ukraine (2:13:13), posted faster times than the men's winners at the Honolulu and the new Las Vegas marathons, which were held the same weekend.
Dallas women's champion Svetlana Ponomarenko of Russia had a faster time than the Las Vegas women's champion but slower than Honolulu's champion.
Dallas' fastest also generous: Alberto Castro receives $250 for being the first Dallas resident finisher. He ran a 2:41:08. The first Dallas woman, Debra Johnson, finished in 3:17:15.
Castro, 26, said he plans to donate the money to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, the race's beneficiary. He's had relatives treated at the hospital.
"This is the first time I got prize money, so I decide to donate to the hospital," he said. "That's what I'm going to do. It will be a gift for the children."
Family and friends finished marathon for Mark: In September, Mark Cochran was one of four people killed in a plane crash in Colorado. Before he died, he had invited his friends and family to join him by running a relay, the half or cheering if 26.2 miles was too far. Approximately 28 of Cochran's friends and family members came out, including his father, Mike, who ran on a five-person relay team, and his two sisters, Erin and Elaine, who both finished the half.
"The race went great," said Susan Jeroslow, who helped coordinate the five, five-person relays. "It really was such a good feeling to know that we were all out there to honor Mark, especially those people who would never consider getting up before dawn to run, of all things."
Briefly: William Moore, 45, of Dallas won the men's masters title in 2:43:13. In 1998, Moore, then 37, was the first overall finisher in 2:20:37. Terry Ziegler won the marathon in 1974 and 1975 and won the masters in 1991. ... Laura Kearns' Vintage Ladies again won the women's masters relay, finishing in 3:16:18. Other members were: Sandy Brothers, Catherine Burns, Julie Baldwin Brown and Donna Spencer. Kearns has told race officials that she has been the captain of the winning women's masters team every year since 1999.
Doug Caldwell, 59, of Plano completed his 25th consecutive White Rock Marathon in 5:52:48. ... John Allen, 37, of Coppell finished his first marathon in 5:19:42. A few days later, he said he can't wait to train for another marathon. He wasn't so sure right after the race. "I was thinking, 'This is crazy. I'm cold. I hurt. What was I thinking?' " Now, he said he wants to break 5 hours, which he thinks is realistic with more thorough training. ... Dane Rauschenberg, 30, of Virginia finished in 3:09:36. Dallas was his 49th marathon in 49 weeks. He's running one marathon every weekend this year to raise money for the Mobile, Ala., chapter of L'Arche International, an organization that assists individuals with mental handicaps.
