Filling the gaps

With the Aggies going to a pro-style offense under new coach Mike Sherman, top-flight receivers are a necessity. Jeffrey Fuller of McKinney Boyd is the only receiver signee after Arp's Sedrick Johnson signed with Iowa State instead.

Maybe later

Most offensive linemen redshirt their first season. But Leroy Chevalier of Houston Yates and Jeffrey Hyde of Colleyville Covenant could both play because of depth issues. Three starting offensive linemen are gone.

Still searching

Losing S Markelle Martin after the coaching change highlights the fact that A&M needs to load up on defensive backs in 2009. If anyone knows about a shut-down corner, call the A&M coaching staff.

Coachspeak

"A bona-fide blue chip pass rusher, do we have that in this group? I can't say we do, and I can't say we don't. But that's an area I'll be looking for in this class to see who can do that."

Mike Sherman

Notable

Several recruiting experts credited Mike Sherman's first hire, Tim Cassidy, for keeping this class together. Cassidy was A&M's recruiting coordinator from 1989 to 2004. ... QB Tommy Dorman and WR Jeffrey Fuller, enrolled at A&M in January and will go through spring drills. ... Brenham's Kyle Mangan could end up becoming a fullback. ... Josh Ayers of Euless Trinity projects as a tight end, but he's versatile enough to play multiple positions up front.
