Football: Warhawks shut down Mean Green in rout
North Texas head coach Todd Dodge and his players spent the last few days talking about how critical it was to build on a rare win last week over Western Kentucky in a home game Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. UNT had momentum in its favor after snapping a 15-game Sun Belt Conference losing streak against the Hilltoppers and receiving final approval to build a new stadium. The good vibes from those successes vanished on a night the Warhawks hammered the Mean Green 33-6 at Fouts Field.

Football: Dodge, Dunbar have off nights
Riley Dodge has enjoyed some monster offensive games during his decorated career, both at Southlake Carroll and North Texas. The same could be said for Lance Dunbar. The pair just couldn’t seem to get anything going on Saturday night during the Mean Green’s 33-6 thrashing at the hands of Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe at Fouts Field.

Dodge: Lineup switches help defense
North Texas made a few changes in its lineup in the wake of one of its best stretches of the season defensively last week in a win over Western Kentucky. UNT head coach Todd Dodge was happy with the way those changes paid off at times on Saturday in a 33-6 loss to Louisiana-Monroe at Fouts Field. The Mean Green still didn’t make enough plays to win, but saw some signs of improvement.

Football: UNT aims to keep run game rolling
The assumption when Todd Dodge took over as North Texas’ head coach after the 2006 season was the Mean Green would develop into a team that relied on throwing the ball all over the field. Dodge sent quarterbacks from Southlake Carroll to Alabama and Missouri in Greg McElroy and Chase Daniel, respectively, not to mention wide receiver Blake Cantu to Oregon. As UNT heads into a game against Louisiana-Monroe today, though, there is little doubt the Mean Green’s success has been directly tied to grinding out yards on the ground. Sophomore Lance Dunbar leads the Sun Belt Conference with 961 rushing yards and is one big reason the Mean Green is by far the league’s best running team with an average of 197.9 rushing yards a game.

Basketball: TWU stuns UNT
North Texas’ game against TWU didn’t count for anything, at least not in terms of either team’s record. The scene at the Super Pit after the buzzer showed that a 79-75 win over the Mean Green mattered a whole lot to TWU, though. The Division II team from across town got a chance to take down the major college headliner, and capitalized for the first time since 1981. TWU’s players rushed the floor at the Super Pit and spent several minutes celebrating what was supposed to be a relatively meaningless exhibition game.

Football: UNT aims to build on huge victories
North Texas head coach Todd Dodge could sense a different feeling around the school’s athletic department this week, one he thought wide receiver Jamaal Jackson summed up perfectly. For the first time since its season-opener, the Mean Green is basking in the glow of a win on the field that just so happened to come two days after the school received final clearance to replace its field. “Jamaal told me yesterday that food tastes better, water tastes better and he slept better,” Dodge said. “It’s a good feeling. There is no doubt. This team works hard. The reward you are looking for is a win on Saturday.”

Football: Second half adjustments give UNT defense boost

North Texas has been fishing for a solution to the problems that have plagued its defense all season long. That search appeared to pay off on Saturday in a win over Western Kentucky, despite an unsightly 68-49 final score. Defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach came out of the press box to roam the sidelines, Eddrick Gilmore started at defensive end for the first time this season and redshirt freshman linebacker Jeremy Phillips took advantage of extra playing time by posting his best game of the season

Men's basketball: UNT finalizing deals with Texas Tech, LSU
Johnny Jones was a part of some of the biggest moments in LSU basketball history during his days as a player and assistant coach with the Tigers. Next season, he will get a chance to return to Baton Rouge, La., as North Texas’ head coach. Jones confirmed on Monday that UNT is in the process of finalizing a home-and-home contract both with LSU and Texas Tech.

WACO — The North Texas tennis team wrapped up the HEB Baylor Invitational on Sunday. Senior Catalina Cruz made it to the semi-finals of the women's consolation draw, but fell to Ole Miss' Connor Vogel 6-0, 6-3.

Volleyball: UNT suffers five-set loss
For a second time this week, the North Texas volleyball team had a Sun Belt power on the ropes in the fifth set. But just like Denver on Monday night, Arkansas State found a way to escape the Mean Green Volleyball Center with a five-set win,27-25, 18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 16-14.

Todd Dodge is like a lot of head coaches. He has tunnel vision sometimes, and North Texas ought to be thrilled that’s the case. Because while several administrators and observers were sweating out the final formal approval for the school’s new stadium from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Dodge had his nose stuck to the grindstone trying to cap a big week in UNT athletics history in the only way that seemed appropriate. Dodge was trying to figure out a way to pull out a win over Western Kentucky.

There were times Saturday when Riley Dodge and North Texas’ offense looked unstoppable while running around and through Western Kentucky at Fouts Field. Unstoppable is just what UNT had to be against the Hilltoppers. The Mean Green scored on 10 of its 13 possessions, including one that allowed it to run out the clock in a 68-49 win that snapped a 15-game Sun Belt Conference losing streak and a six-game overall skid dating to a season-opening win over Ball State. The 68 points the Mean Green (2-6, 1-4) scored tied the school record for points in a game set against Youngstown State in 1957.

North Texas didn’t have its best day defensively in its game against Western Kentucky on Saturday. Far from it. But when the Mean Green needed a big play or two in the second half, some of UNT’s leaders stepped to the forefront and made the stops that made the difference in a 68-49 win at Fouts Field.

Football: Bailey took unusual path to UNT
On the surface, it seems natural that Tyler Bailey would end up playing college football. The North Texas senior offensive lineman grew up in a football family in Lexington, Ky., and at 6-2 and 292 pounds, has the perfect build for the guard position he has filled off an on for the Mean Green the last four seasons. Ask Bailey about his unusual journey that will continue with a landmark game today against his home-state team, Western Kentucky, and he will say that he might not have capitalized on his potential without his grandfather.

Volleyball: UNT rallies past UALR in 4
Amy Huddleston and Kati Dillard broke into the Mean Green record books, but Salah Schoenecke stole the show for North Texas in a 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday. Schoenecke powered a potent Mean Green (10-16, 6-6) offense with 16 kills, vaulting UNT to a season-high .338 attack percentage. Back at .500 in league play, the win puts UNT back into the driver’s seat for a bid to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next month in Bowling Green, Ky.

Cross country: Mean Green hopeful for conference meet
Patrick Strong will look to improve on his third-place finish from a year ago when the North Texas men’s and women’s cross country teams compete in the Sun Belt Conference meet today in Monroe, La. UNT is picked to finish fourth in the women’s 5-kilometer race and fifth in the men’s 8K.

The University of North Texas cleared the final hurdle in its drive to build a new football stadium on Thursday when the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the $78 million project. UNT plans to break ground on a new venue that will seat more than 30,000 before its game against Army on Nov. 21. Construction is scheduled to begin in January.
