'Once-in-a-lifetime' shot for Poteet grad
Lee to take part in NBA D-League Pre-Draft Camp01:51 AM CDT on Saturday, July 28, 2007
Mesquite Poteet graduate Brandon Lee has spent the last three years playing basketball in Mexico and Texas trying to grab the attention of NBA personnel.
Lee's best chance at one day becoming an NBA player, however, will come today and Sunday in Arlington.
Lee, a 6-2, 185-pound point guard, was among 30 players from across the nation chosen as finalists for the Miller Lite Go Pro Challenge. That is a promotion that gives players an opportunity to showcase their skills at the NBA Development League Pre-Draft Camp that is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at UT-Arlington's Activities Building. The camp won't be open to the public.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me," said the 25-year-old Lee, who graduated from Poteet in 2000 and from Tarleton State in 2004. "I'm trying to get my name out there, and I just want to showcase my talent."
Coaches from the 12 NBA D-League teams will be on hand both days to evaluate the players, said Chris Alpert, vice president of basketball operations and player personnel for the league.
"What we'll be looking for is, first, their athleticism, their size, their quickness, their speed and their physical attributes to play professional basketball," Alpert said. "We'll also look at their basketball skills. We're looking for a potential diamond in the rough or a guy who has been overlooked."
After the camp, a select group of players will be offered a contract to enter the D-League draft, which will be in early November.
"Those players who are offered a contract will have the opportunity to be selected to go to one of our team training camps," Alpert said. "Our league is a league of opportunity. We feel like this platform offers these players an opportunity to get exposure."
Lee spent last season helping lead the Texas Tycoons to the American Basketball Association championship game. In 30 games for the Tycoons, he averaged 18.3 points, 3.2 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game. He shot 46.4 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from 3-point range.
Lee averaged 16 points per game in his two-year career at Tarleton State before playing in a pair of professional leagues in Mexico.
"This is a real big deal for me," Lee said. "I've had a personal trainer working out with me on a daily basis. I feel like I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
