Final defendant gets 12 years in ERCOT scandal

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The sixth and final defendant in an ERCOT contract fraud and bribery scheme was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison. Stephen C. Wallace, 46, was sentenced for his role in the scam targeting the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the state's main electric grid. Mr. Wallace, who was an ERCOT program director, had pleaded guilty to misapplication of fiduciary property related to the scheme uncovered by The Dallas Morning News. Three co-defendants have been sentenced to prison, and two others were sentenced to jail or probation. The men were accused of creating shell companies and charging for work never done.
HOUSTON – A driver apparently trying to back his car into a spot in a high-rise apartment building's parking lot instead drove through a brick wall, sending the car crashing to a rooftop more than 40 feet below and killing the driver Monday evening, officials said. They identified the man as Phillip Hines, 58.
EL PASO – Gov. Rick Perry signed a bill Tuesday to create a weeklong summer program for middle school and high school students interested in studying math, science and engineering. The bill, which allocates about $2 million for state colleges and universities, also establishes an engineering scholarship program. The bill also provides $48 million in startup funds to the El Paso campus of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for a full, four-year medical school.
