400 protest immigrant detainee center in Taylor

TAYLOR, Texas – About 400 protesters gathered outside of a center used for detained immigrant families Saturday as part of World Refugee Day and asked officials to close down the facility, an official participating in the protest said. Civil liberties advocates contend families at the T. Don Hutto facility are subjected to psychologically abusive guards, inadequate medical care and inhumane conditions in an immigration center they say is run like a prison.

Student on world record quest stops in Houston

HOUSTON – Two stops before completing his record-setting, around-the-world flight, Barrington Irving glided into Houston on Saturday. The 23-year-old aerospace student, who built his plane from more than $300,000 in donated parts, took off from Miami on March 23 hoping to become the youngest person and first black pilot to fly alone around the globe. He plans to arrive in Florida on Wednesday.

Boy with toy gun shot to death by Arkansas officer

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – A 12-year-old boy who was carrying a toy gun was shot to death Friday evening by a West Memphis police officer, who apparently thought the gun was real. Police Chief Bob Paudert said officers were watching an apartment building about 10 p.m. when the boy appeared. An officer believed the toy pistol was a real weapon and fired two shots. The child, whose name was not released, died at the scene.
