Firefighter injured, 8 units destroyed in Dallas fire
03:00 AM CST on Tuesday, January 6, 2009
DALLAS - Power problems may have played a role in an apartment complex fire that led to the injury of one firefighter Monday.
Shortly after power was restored to the Town Colony Apartments in the 10000 block of Royal Lane in Dallas, residents said they heard a loud boom. That was when residents said they exited their apartments to discover a fire blazing at the complex.
Residents said the electricity had been out over two hours before the fire started.
Eight units were destroyed and one firefighter was injured after falling through an upper level floor onto the ground level. The firefighter's injuries were non-life threatening.
Dallas Fire-Rescue reported that the blaze quickly escalated into a three-alarm fire.
"She lost everything," said Irene Brewer, a friend whose apartment was among those destroyed. "And she and her children were not there, thank God. I gave her a hug and she was crying."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Oncor crews were on the scene to probe into whether the fire was electrical in nature.
Meanwhile, families are being relocated to other units and the Red Cross was at the scene to give any help needed.
