Man with rifle holds police at bay
10:54 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008
DALLAS — Dallas police said an armed man surrendered Wednesday evening after holding officers at bay from his apartment for about four hours.
The incident, near Main Street and Hall Street in the city's Deep Ellum neighborhood, forced police to seal off some streets surrounding the suspect's apartment. Officials also evacuated some nearby businesses — including an art gallery and a coffee shop — as a precaution.
Heavily-armed police wearing bullet-proof vests and driving armored vehicles surrounded the scene as negotiations continued through the evening.
Just before 10 o'clock, police used tear gas to force their way into the suspect's apartment.
No one was injured, but some neighbors had to spend the night elsewhere while the caustic fumes dissipated.
