A cemetery should be sacred but vandals are disturbing the dead in Denton.

They hit the same cemetery twice in the last few days.

The damage has sparked outrage because it isn't just any graveyard.

This cemetery has been around for more than 150 years - it's part of Denton's history.

City leaders believe more than one person is behind the vandalism because some of the headstones that are damaged weigh more than 1,000 pounds.

Dozens of yellow flags litter the IOOF cemetery in downtown Denton.

Each flag marks a broken and damaged headstones.

Vandals knocked over 48 of them, some dating back to the 1800s. They attacked history.

"This one of our historic landmarks, people who laid the groundwork for why Denton is a community," said John Cabrales of the City of Denton.

The city plans to repair each headstone and it won't be cheap.

The bill will be $4,500.

Police hope to nab those behind the destruction.

They are looking for leads.

If you have any information, call the Denton police department.
