Boater killed when canoe capsizes on Trinity
03:42 PM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
DALLAS COUNTY — One of two canoeists died this afternoon after being caught in rapids on the Trinity River in southeast Dallas.
Dallas police and Fire-Rescue personnel were at the scene near the 1300 block of Riverwood Road and McCommas Bluff Park.
"We just got caught in the rapid and overturned," said the survivor, whose name wasn’t immediately available.
A green canoe continued to bob in the river, which drops a few feet as it passes through two concrete structures, while rescue crews tried to determine how to safely recover the victim’s body.
Rescuers were called to the scene about 1 p.m. when someone saw a person fall into the water, dispatchers said.
Unused floatation devices were seen near the body in the fast-moving water about 1/2 mile north of Interstate 20.
