MESQUITE — No one was hurt when fire swept through a residence in Mesquite Wednesday morning.

The alarm went out at 6 a.m. in the 2000 block of Emerald Oak, just south of Mesquite Metropolitan Airport.

A portion of the roof of the one-story brick home collapsed, and aerial views showed flames leaping up from the gaping hole.

Mesquite Fire Department spokesman Phillip Mongeau said the owner of the house was at work when the fire broke out.

"Most of the damage was in the back of the house," Mongeau said. "We don't know the cause."

He said firefighters were "lucky" that the flames did not spread to other houses in the neighborhood.
