FORT WORTH — A Fort Worth toddler was in critical condition Thursday after she was attacked by two pit bulls Wednesday night. The two year-old girl's aunt was also seriously injured in the attack at the Redwood Mobile Home Park in the 5100 block of DeSoto Court.
Police said 25-year-old Chrystal Owens was giving the child a bath around dinner time when the attack occurred.
The toddler was horribly mauled around her head and other parts of her body. Police said she has multiple broken bones and puncture wounds.
Police said Owens, the owner of the two dogs, was also badly bitten and suffered broken bones.
"For some unknown reason, something triggered the dogs," said police spokesman Lt. Kenneth Dean. "The dogs came running into the bathroom and attacked the child. At that point in time, the aunt did whatever she humanly possible could do by throwing herself on top of the child, trying to protect the child, and that's how the aunt sustained her injuries."
"It was probably one of the most vicious attacks they'd ever seen," Lt. Dean added, citing reports from officers who investigated the case. "The scene was quite bloody."
Following the attack, police said Owens somehow made it to the front porch of her mobile home and called 911.
The dogs ran out of the house. They were later captured and have been euthanized. Their bodies were sent away for testing. Police said they could find no records that the animals had received required shots.
The trailer park does not permit pit bulls or other breeds that could be considered dangerous, but neighbors said they had no idea the dogs were there.
The girl was being treated at Cook Children's Medical Center. Owens was at Harris Methodist Hospital.
No charges have been filed.
