Grand Prairie police kill gunman
12:27 PM CDT on Monday, May 12, 2008
GRAND PRAIRIE — A man who barricaded himself in a Grand Prairie apartment early Monday morning was fatally wounded by an officer, Grand Prairie police said.
The incident in the 500 block of West Westchester Road began shortly after 4 a.m. when police received reports of a man shooting a weapon in his apartment.
"Our tactical officers and our hostage negotiators did respond to the scene," said Grand Prairie police Det. John Brimmer. "He continued firing multiple rounds inside of this apartment."
Officers evacuated neighbors to get them out of the line of fire.
The man, identified as 46-year-old William Kevin Stanmore, may have been bipolar and not taking his medication, Det. Brimmer said.
"Then, at about 7:05, approximately, he fired at our officers and then he started coming out of the apartment," Det. Brimmer said. "That's when one of our sharpshooters had to take the shot to keep him from harming any of our officers."
Det. Brimmer said the officer who fired the shot that felled Stanmore would be debriefed and placed on a three-day paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure.
An internal investigation will take place to ensure that responding officers complied with all regulations.
