Teen prostitution: 'This is not acceptable'

DALLAS — What were you doing at the age of 13? Riding your bike? Doing homework?
It's unlikely that "dancing at a strip club" or "working as a prostitute" would be possible answers to that innocent question.
But Monday night, News 8 broke a story about a Dallas nightclub where two middle school students were allegedly involved in those activities.
Dallas police said they found two middle school friends allegedly selling sex at Club Metropolis, near Love Field. Police said a 13-year-old girl coerced a friend into prostitution.
In December, Dallas police arrested several people for letting a pre-teen strip at another club. "We actually had a case where a 12-year-old was dancing without her clothes in a local bar," said police Lt. Ches Williams.
Some city council members are now looking to see if Club Metropolis and similar venues are operating with proper permits and in compliance with city law.
"If they have a permit and are still not following the rules, their permit should be suspended," said Dr. Elba Garcia, who heads the city's public safety committee. She said it is unacceptable for any club to continue operating if they are letting children go inside.
Dr. Garcia and other high ranking city officials are asking Dallas police and city employees to track down the records for these facilities.
"We do have tools to shut them down," Dr. Garcia said. "This is not acceptable."
Dallas police have set up a special unit to help find teen prostitutes and get them out of trouble. Police are going after the clubs and the people who are using them to make money.
"When stealing childhood from innocent kids, it's high on our priority list," Lt. Williams said.
Dallas police said the girls involved are now in detention. They will try to get them counseling and help get them back home.
Police said while the girls may have broken the law, they are also victims who need help.
