The plane was heavily damaged in the crash landing.

FORT WORTH — A small plane that reported midair mechanical trouble Monday morning crashed south of Loop 820 on Main Street in Fort Worth.

A fire department spokesperson said the pilot, who was the only person aboard the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, appeared to have escaped without serious injuries.

"That aircraft's totally destroyed," said Fort Worth Fire Department Battalion Chief Gary Parker. "It was a pretty big impact—it knocked the engine off the aircraft, and with those kinds of injuries, the pilot was conscious and talking to us."

The unnamed pilot was taken to a local hospital for examination.

The plane reportedly radioed a distress signal to the Meacham Airport control tower shortly before the crash landing, saying the engine had failed.

Representatives from National Transportation Safety Board were on their way to the crash scene to conduct an investigation.

The 1958-vintage aircraft came down in a grassy area adjacent to the westbound entrance ramp to Loop 820 from North Main Street.. Traffic impact was minimal at noon.
