UNT academy accepts

3 Irving-area students

Three students from Irving have been accepted to the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas in Denton. The students are James W. Filbeck III of MacArthur High and William Han and Harshitha Ramesh of Coppell High.

Catholic Foundation

announces awards

The Catholic Foundation presented its final Work of Heart Awards this month. The recipients of the $500 grant include Nancy Martinez, Jared Randolph and Lori Saldi of the Highlands School in Irving, and Jim Kurowski of Bishop Dunne Catholic School in Oak Cliff.

Board to honor

new superintendent

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD board of trustees will hold a reception in honor of new superintendent Bobby C. Burns after its board meeting Wednesday. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building, 1445 N. Perry Road. The reception is expected to run from 8 to 9 p.m. Visit www.cfbisd.edu.

Foundation announces

scholarships, grants

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Educational Foundation awarded more than 70 scholarships totaling $61,090 to graduating seniors. The foundation also awarded $36,788 in teacher grants, scholarships and program awards. More than 40 teachers received awards. Founded in 1997, the nonprofit foundation supports C-FB ISD campuses, teachers and students. Visit www.cfbisdeducationalfoundation.org.

GRAND PRAIRIE

Reagan Middle

donates shoes

Reagan Middle School's Junior National Honor Society donated 227 pairs of mostly new shoes to the Grand Prairie Food and Clothing Co-op. Betty Rose, co-op vice president, presented a proclamation to the society for its donation. The society recently inducted 90 new members. Susan Moore is the group's sponsor.

Hurst-Euless- Bedford

District announces

new appointments

The Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD named Carma Schellhorn as principal of Wilshire Elementary. She replaces Jonathan James, who was named principal of Central Junior High School. David Robbins retired as Central's principal.

Van Mathews was named the new L.D. Bell Band director. He replaces Jeremy L. Earnhart, who joined the Irving school district. Mathews previously worked at Haltom High, Lewisville High and Lake Highlands High.

IRVING

District names new

fine arts director

Jeremy L. Earnhart has been named Irving ISD's director of fine arts. He replaces Alfred "Buzzy" Green, who retired. Earnhart started his career in music education in Fort Worth in 1997. He has been director of bands at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst. He earned degrees from the University of North Texas.

LITTLE ELM

District announces

early TAKS results

Based on preliminary TAKS results, the Little Elm school district may have five exemplary campuses and two recognized campuses. Administrators also report that the final data analysis may result in the district's first ever academically recognized rating overall. Final results will be announced July 31.

Two schools get

new principals

Dr. Anna King, assistant principal at Fossil Ridge High School, will become principal at Lakeside Junior High starting in mid-July. She replaces Larry Winget, who retired this month after 29 years in education and two years in the Little Elm school district. King earned degrees from the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University.

Christine Gibson was named assistant principal at Hackberry Elementary School. She replaces Andrea Hare, who retired. With degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso and Dallas, she started her teaching career with the El Paso ISD in 2000.

SOUTHLAKE

Carroll High athletes

will be recognized

Several Carroll High athletes will be recognized July 15 at Champions' Day in Austin. Gov. Rick Perry will honor the students on the steps of the Texas State Capitol. The students are members of the girls' golf team, wrestler Stephen McPeek and track athlete C.J. Brown.

WAXAHACHIE

Student accepted

to leadership academy

Carter Rolen, a student at Clift Middle School, has been selected to participate in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy from July 13 to 17 in Dallas and Fort Worth. His teacher, Charlotte VanDervoort, recommended him for the program based on his academic achievement and leadership skills.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Brookhaven to offer

intensive English

Brookhaven College recently signed an agreement to offer international students intensive English classes. Dr. Richard D. McCrary, interim president, met with officials of Osee Global Education to work on the plans to allow people to enroll in Brookhaven's Intensive English Program.

UNIVERSITY

Master's students

exhibit opened at UTA

The second annual Masters of Fine Arts Exhibition recently opened at the Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington. The exhibit is divided into four areas: film and video, glass, intermediate (art that combines and explores shared mediums) and visual communication. Located in the Fine Arts Building at 502 S. Cooper Street, the exhibit will run through Aug. 22.

UTA names dean, offers scholarship

The University of Texas at Arlington will offer a new scholarship for graduate students who have not found a job or have lost a job because of the economy. The deadline for the $2,500 UTA Graduate Stimulus Scholarship is July 1.

UTA named Dr. Scott Ryan its new dean of the school of social work. He also directs the Institute for Social Work Research, is a senior research fellow at the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute in New York City and is editor of the journal Adoption Quarterly.

UD Center earns

two awards

The University of Dallas was re-designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. UD has been a Center of Academic Excellence since 2003 and is one of only seven universities to have the designation.

The second award was a recertification of its Information Assurance software by the National Security Agency. The university received both awards at the 13th annual Colloquium for Information System Security Education in Seattle. Visit www.udallas.edu.

Festival to feature

UNT musicians

Students, faculty members and alumni from the University of North Texas will perform in the Crested Butte Music Festival, which is from July 4 to 26. Students will perform "Bernstein on Broadway" July 14, and the school's Jazz Septet will perform July 21. Others performing include Dobroslawa Rybinska, Samuel Park, Rebecca Weidman-Winter, Michael Galvin, Porter Wyatt-Henderson and Terri Sundberg. Visit www.crestedbuttemusicfestival.com.
