Monday is last day to register to vote in general election
08:01 AM CDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008
Time is running out to register to vote in this year's general election.
Monday is the final day for residents to complete a voter registration application and turn it in to their county elections office in time to vote in the Nov. 4 election. The applications must be hand-delivered by the close of business or postmarked on Monday and sent by mail.
The forms can be found at libraries, post offices and election offices. Residents cannot register to vote online, but they can find the registration form at the Texas Secretary of State's Web site to print out for submission.
Forms can be mailed to the following locations:
•Dallas County Elections Office, 2377 North Stemmons Freeway, Suite 820, Dallas, Texas 75207
•Collin County Elections Office, 2010 Redbud Blvd., Suite 102, McKinney, Texas 75069
•Tarrant County Elections Office, 2700 Premier St., Fort Worth, Texas 76111
•Denton County Elections Office, P.O. Box 1720, Denton, Texas 76202
•Ellis County Elections Office, 106 S. Monroe St., Waxahachie, Texas 75165
Elections officials said residents have been overwhelming workers as the deadline approaches.
Sharon Rowe, the Collin County elections administrator, said her office has been getting at least 500 calls a day.
"We are swamped trying to get everyone registered to vote," she said.
Texas has more than 13.2 million registered voters, which is about 75 percent of the state's total voting-age population. Total registration has grown by about 500,000 since the March primaries.
