Officer indicted in

Sam's Club robbery

A Dallas police officer was indicted Monday on charges he planned and carried out a June robbery at a Red Bird-area Sam's Club where he worked off-duty security.

Officer Alph Coleman is charged with aggravated robbery in the June 27 incident at the store in the 2900 block of West Wheatland Road, police said. He was arrested in August and released on bail.

Officer Coleman, 29, was in uniform and working at the store that night when a masked gunman entered and held him at gunpoint, the officer told investigators. The robbery failed when employees locked themselves in a storage room and refused to give the robbers access to the vault.

Investigators said they ultimately identified holes in Officer Coleman's story and have said phone records indicate the officer and getaway driver were in contact shortly before the crime.

Floyd Gibson Jr., 37, and Christopher Johnson, 26, were also indicted on aggravated robbery charges. Mr. Gibson and Cecil Rosemond, 35, were indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery.

A decision will be made on whether to fire Officer Coleman once an administrative investigation is completed. He has been with the Police Department since 2004 and has no history of disciplinary problems, police said.

Woman guilty in theft

involving blind friend

A 38-year-old Lewisville woman was convicted Monday of stealing more than $370,000 from a legally blind elderly woman who is a high-ranking Mary Kay Cosmetics executive. Tamara Favors' conviction is the first case tried by the Dallas County district attorney's elder abuse financial crimes prosecutor – Donna Strittmatter – in a newly created position. Ms. Favors, who was a friend of Helen McVoy, 88, helped the older woman pay her bills once a week, according to district attorney spokesman Jamille Bradford. Over three years, there were 74 instances of theft committed by Ms. Favors where she either wrote checks to herself or took money from Ms. McVoy's bank account, Ms. Bradfield said. Ms. McVoy has held the top national sales director position for 17 years at Mary Kay Cosmetics. Ms. Favors is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 17.

Lanes to be closed

on tollway tonight

Drivers on the Dallas North Tollway could face delays tonight as an entrance ramp and various lanes are shut down for lane striping.

The northbound entrance ramp from Interstate 35E will be closed from 11 tonight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

Various lanes from McKinnon Street to Wycliff Avenue will also be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Authorities said the closures are needed to continue finishing lane striping on the Dallas North Tollway's southern end.

Woman who ran

brothels is sentenced

A woman who pleaded guilty to operating brothels at tanning salons and spas, including one in Dallas, was sentenced to 1 ½ years in federal prison Monday.

Jong Ock "June" Mao, who ran the Paradise Spa in Dallas, was also ordered to forfeit her interest in more than $10 million worth of property at a hearing in U.S. District Court. The forfeited properties include four private motocross tracks in Texas, California and Florida operated by her company, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Ms. Mao, a native of Korea, pleaded guilty in July to conspiring to use interstate commerce to promote prostitution and using brothel proceeds to buy real estate.

Authorities say Ms. Mao operated five brothels in Southern California.

FORT WORTH

90-year-old woman

attacked at her home

Fort Worth police were searching Monday for a woman who authorities say slapped, threatened and robbed a 90-year-old woman after she returned home from a grocery store.

Mary Ware Dorman was approached by a woman in her driveway in the 1500 block of Azteca Drive about 4 p.m. Sunday after she returned home from a store, according to a Fort Worth police report. The woman demanded money from Ms. Dorman and then pushed her into the living room through the garage.

As Ms. Dorman tried to get up from a chair, the woman slapped her across the face, causing Ms. Dorman to fall, according to the report. The suspect then threw Ms. Dorman on a bed in a back bedroom and told her not to get up or call police.

She rummaged through Ms. Dorman's house, taking a wedding ring, car keys, gas card and her driver's license before leaving. Ms. Dorman was not seriously hurt, according to the report.

Police believe the woman may have followed Ms. Dorman from a nearby Albertsons store. Video surveillance showed a white four-door sedan leaving the parking lot shortly after Ms. Dorman. The woman was wearing white socks on her hands.
