Separate attacks by pit bulls injure 3 in Dallas
12:00 AM CST on Sunday, February 22, 2009
Pit bull attacks on opposite ends of Dallas at nearly the same time Saturday sent two people to the hospital by ambulance and also injured a 12-year-old boy.
At 5:20 p.m., according to police, two pit bulls escaped from their yard in the 3300 block of Bernal Drive near North Westmoreland Road in West Dallas and wandered to nearby Jerry's Market.
"They began attacking people at random as they exited the store," said Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse, a Dallas police spokesman.
Clarence Webber, 59, was bitten in the head and face and may lose an eye, police said. Helen Fuller, 50, suffered injuries to her arms and upper body, and was in stable condition. Both were taken by ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where Webber was in serious condition, police said.
Officers eventually located both dogs back in their yard, where animal-control workers seized them. Janse said it was unclear what will happen to the dogs, or whether their owner will be charged with a crime.
About 10 minutes after those attacks began, a 12-year-old boy was playing in his back yard in the 10600 block of Hamlin Drive, near Elam Road in Pleasant Grove, when his ball went over the fence into the neighbor's yard. The boy jumped the fence and was attacked by a pit bull mix.
The boy's family told police they would take the boy to the hospital. That dog also was seized by animal control officers, and its fate was unknown as well.
