From Staff Reports

The Dallas Morning News won two awards at the Online News Association awards banquet Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Reporters Reese Dunklin and Brooks Egerton won for their investigative series "Unequal Justice" in the Investigative, Large Site category.

The series revealed serious problems in the Texas criminal justice system that had been ignored for far too long.

"Talking to the Taliban" from TheGlobeandMail.com was a co-winner in this category.

"Unequal Justice" was cited by judges as "effective and well produced." The entry, judges said, "dug under the surface of conventional wisdom, asked why is this happening and put a face on the problem – what an investigative piece is all about."

"Unequal Justice" also was a finalist in the Knight Award for Public Service category.

Photographer Mona Reeder was honored for "The Bottom Line" in the Online Commentary, Medium Site category. Ms. Reeder's series of photographs and text depicted society's "forgotten people."

"The winner here presented a different way to tell a story with a very strong opinion. ... Some of the photos sit among the legendary images in the photographic canon of the American journalism," a judge said.

Additionally, AlDiaTx.com was a finalist in the General Excellence in Online Journalism, Small Site, Non-English category.

The ONA honors excellence in digital journalism.
