Door open to My Friend's House sponsors
12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, June 3, 2007
Collin Intervention to Youth, which operates the CITY House teen shelter, is inviting potential corporate and individual sponsors to join CITY officials for a complimentary buffet and a presentation on naming opportunities for CITY's newest endeavor, My Friend's House, at 6:30 p.m. June 15 at Plano Centre.
KXAS-TV (Channel 5) sports anchor Newy Scruggs will emcee the evening designed to recruit new supporters while recognizing longtime community partners, a list topped by all four Plano Rotary clubs, which adopted My Friend's House as their 2005 Centennial Project.
Other top sponsors are HomeAid, the charitable arm of the Dallas Area Homebuilders Association, and Sotherby Homes, builder captain for My Friend's House.
The project is being supported at the usual corporate and civic levels, and by an unusual group of budding philanthropists who are still in grade school. Students at Carlisle Elementary, which counts My Friend's House in its attendance zone, have raised $1,700 for the shelter through the sale of candy and baked goods.
Andrews Elementary recently recognized several students who asked for donations instead of presents at their birthday parties, and reaped almost $1,200 for My Friend's House.
Executive director Charles Wolford, board president Candice Ort and executive officers Bryan Lee, Chris Krupa, Chris O'Brien and David Downs will greet guests and explain the CITY mission, which is to help youths and their families resolve physical and emotional crises.
Miss America runner-up Shilah Phillips will attend.
Design team member Lainie Scruggs and Elaine Vale of Ikea, a key sponsor, will unveil vignettes and visuals of the shelter's interior.
Go to www.cityhouse.org for information about room sponsorships and naming opportunities in this $1.6 million project, which will shelter children up to 10 years old who are removed from their homes because of abuse, abandonment or neglect
RSVP by Friday for the June 15 "Making Space" event to Patricia Powers at 972-424-4626.
My Friend's House is stockpiling supplies for its future residents through baby showers being hosted by groups and organizations and coordinated by Mellie Baggett and Susan Stow. Mrs. Baggett and Mrs. Stow also organized a special Mother's Day event at Bachendorf's, inviting CITY guests to "Shower Mom With Love" as they previewed designs from Lagos and Di Modolo. Each designer partnered with Bachendorf's in donating a piece to benefit Collin Intervention to Youth
If you've been thinking it's time to take your many talents out of the closet and trot them onstage, you could have that opportunity at Frisco Freedom Fest on July 4. Of course, you'll have to be willing to do this for free, but you could say you (sorta) shared a stage with Clay Aiken, who'll perform as part of the evening's festivities.
Members of a committee will review written, video and audio submissions and choose their 20 favorites to perform in 10-minute slots beginning at 4 p.m. at City Hall Plaza.
Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Friday. Contact Christie Hartwell at 972-292-5073 or chartwell@friscotexas.gov.

Billy Lanier, Sgt. Scotty Morrison, Lt. Mark Sanderson and Sgt. Mitch Selman of the Sheriff's Department, and Detective P. D. Jackson of the Allen Police Department.
