The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, which raised record donations during its latest fundraising campaign, awarded more than $46 million to 93 area charities, officials said Wednesday.
The money will be used for programs that focus on education, health and financial stability.
"We are trying nationally to align finite resources to attack some of our communities' most pressing issues," said Gary Godsey, president and chief executive officer of the local United Way. "We're proud of the work we've been able to accomplish."
The United Way has launched a Live United campaign that encourages residents to help by volunteering, donating and advocating.
HOW MUCH: The local United Way raised a record $60 million in pledges during its 2007-08 campaign. More than $4 million of that amount could not be collected. And about $10 million was used for United Way-run programs and administrative costs. The top five local agencies that received funds are:
•Salvation Army, $1.5 million
•Catholic Charities, $1.3 million
•American Red Cross, $1.3 million
•Visiting Nurse Association, $1.3 million
•Children's Medical Center Dallas, $1.1 million
WHO: More than 350 volunteers spent more than 18,500 hours evaluating requests for money and the needs in the community.
WHERE: The money will fund programs in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and southern Denton counties.
