crime panel formed
The mayor and police chief have formed a task force to address convenience store crime in the city, officials said Tuesday.
Mayor Tom Leppert has asked the panel – dubbed the Mayor's Convenience Store Crime Task Force – to review and discuss ideas for improving the stores' safety.
Officers responded to more than 6,300 calls to convenience stores from 2004 to 2007, according to Dallas police statistics.
The task force includes City Council members, police officials, convenience store operators, and members of chambers of commerce and community groups.
Mr. Leppert has asked the panel to return recommendations and a plan of action by June 20.

for downtown project
The City Council on Tuesday approved up to $1.1 million in subsidies for a new downtown apartment and retail complex.
The project, which will include as many as 230 apartments and 15,000 square feet of retail space, marks the latest attempt to breathe life into the city's aging downtown.
Plano will kick in money for public improvements, as well as for the construction of a new pedestrian walkway near the development and Plano's downtown DART station. City officials hope to defray much of the public cost with a grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
Seattle-based Pinnacle is building the estimated $20 million development, to be located at the intersection of 15th Street and the DART line. It is slated to finish in 2010.
