Dallas to get red light camera commission
08:42 AM CST on Monday, February 18, 2008
The Dallas City Council will this week consider creating a commission to advise officials on the installation and operation of Dallas' automated red light-running cameras, satisfying a state law passed last year.
Each City Council member would appoint one member to the commission, according to a draft city ordinance staff plans to present to the council's public safety committee on Tuesday. The council has previously authorized the operation of 100 red-light cameras, which are designed to record motorists illegally running red lights.
As described in the proposed ordinance, commission members would be responsible for:
Making recommendations relating to the installation and operation of red light camera systems
Reviewing results of traffic engineering studies for camera-enforced intersections
Review the placement of photographic traffic signal enforcement systems "to help ensure that camera-enforced intersections are selected without regard to the ethnic or socioeconomic characteristics of the area in which the intersections are located."
Performing "other duties assigned by the city council or requested by the city manager."
Citations stemming from red light camera-generated violations are civil, not criminal matters. They run $75 per violation and do not count against driving or insurance records. Dallas approved its original red light camera contract in September 2006.
