Postal truck plummets from bridge
05:52 PM CST on Tuesday, January 23, 2007
A U.S. Postal Service truck plummeted from the Trinity River Bridge after a collision with a large milk truck Tuesday morning.
The impact created a chain reaction involving a total of five vehicles in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 30.
The traffic near Sylvan Avenue had slowed down around 11:40 a.m. when the milk truck traveling in the left lane collided with the postal truck in front of it, said Sgt. Gil Cerda, a Dallas Police Department spokesman. The impact sent the postal truck across two right lanes of traffic and over the bridge railing.
The milk truck, an 18-wheeler, scraped some railing and punctured its fuel tank before colliding with a van, which set off a chain reaction of two more accidents, Sgt. Cerda said. No milk was spilled.
The postal truck landed in the Trinity River bottoms, where the ground was soft. Jimmie Simpson, 65, the driver of the truck was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, said Polly Gibbs, a USPS spokeswoman. Mr. Simpson had cuts to his face and pain to his shoulder and knee, she said.
The other drivers suffered minor injuries. Police did not release the names of the drivers.
Sgt. Cerda said charges were not expected against the milk truck driver.
As of Tuesday evening, the I-30 eastbound lanes had reopened.
