Makeup junkie: Foundation for beauty

For many of us, January means making resolutions. We start each new year resolving to break bad habits or improve some part of our daily routine. The problem is that we often get so caught up in the excitement of a fresh start that we set unattainable goals that are too easily forgotten. Two years ago, I resolved to stop procrastinating, which turned out to be a tricky decision. I kept putting off when I would work on not procrastinating, and soon enough, that idea went out the window. Last year, I resolved to put an end to my impulse buys, which mainly consist of – what else? – makeup. I succeeded for a couple of months, but there are still a few once-used pieces in my cosmetics drawer, the result of several unplanned shopping trips.

This year, I'm taking a more realistic approach to the same goal: I resolve to invest in a few good basics, like a quality foundation. This is a great resolution for makeup junkies at all levels. Color pieces are almost endless, and they're all a little different, but if you find a foundation you like, you only need one. Plus, if you have a base that looks really good, the rest of your makeup seems to look even better, meaning fewer impulses to add to your stash.

The first step in finding a new foundation is deciding what kind of formula you want. Do you prefer a liquid, cream or powder? Do you need medium to heavy coverage, or do you want something sheerer? Do you want something with an SPF, or do you get that from your moisturizer? What sort of finish do you prefer – matte or dewy? It's OK not to know exactly what you're looking for, but it helps to start with a few ideas. Once you've answered these questions, it's time to shop.

The best place to start is a department store that carries several lines you like. Spend a few minutes looking at what each line has to offer, and don't be afraid to ask someone for help. Most sales associates are specially trained to know which foundations work best for different skin types. If you prefer to shop on your own, just read the containers. Many have descriptions of their coverage and finish printed right on the package. Remember, a matte look provides stronger coverage.

Once you've found a foundation that's right for you, pick out the color that best matches your skin. This is another area where it might be helpful to get the assistance of someone who works behind the counter. Place a small dab of each one you want to try along your jaw. This way, you can make sure the color you select blends with both your face and neck, avoiding the dreaded "foundation line."

If you find a product you like in a color that matches well, blend a few dabs around your nose and on your forehead to see how it looks over a larger area. Walk around in different lights and check how well it matches outside. If you're worried about durability, wear it for the rest of the day and look in the mirror when you get home to see if it stayed on. Tell the sales associate that you would like to test the foundation out for a little while; there will be less pressure to buy right away. You may even get a sample to use the next day. If you still like the look and feel of the foundation by the time you get home, chances are you've found a winner.

If you have easier access to a drugstore than a department store, have no fear – there are great foundations to be found there, too. The only downside is that most drugstores don't have testers available. If you can, bring an old foundation that matches your skin tone so you can find an equivalent color without trying them on.

Keep in mind, foundation should never be kept for more than a year. More than likely, you'll be out before the year is, but if you only wear it on special occasions, make sure to check the bottle every few months for a change in smell or texture. January is a great time to open a new tube – it's much easier to remember when to pitch old products if you open new ones at the start of a new year.

Products for everybody:
Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse: This whipped foundation gives an airbrushed look without feeling caked on. For a sheerer look, apply with a powder brush. Or, smooth on with fingers for more coverage. Not good for very dry skin, as it can accentuate dry patches. $6, drugstores.

Bare Escentuals mineral powder: Applying Bare Minerals foundation is a two-step process. The first powder provides light-to-medium coverage, while the second, translucent powder gives skin a healthy glow. Both are made from minerals, so they do not cause breakouts. This set is especially good for people with hereditary dark circles or rosacea. Bare Minerals can usually be found in starter kits that include instructions and tips for application. Foundation $25, Mineral veil $20, Sephora.com

Clinique Superbalanced: Moisturizing without making skin oily, this foundation works for every age and skin type, though someone with extremely oily areas on her face may need to blot toward the end of the day. Superbalanced leaves skin with a slightly dewy glow that makes anyone look healthy and well-rested. $22.50, Clinique.com
