New to DVD this week: Drillbit Taylor and Vantage Point
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, July 4, 2008
DRILLBIT TAYLOR: Three geeks hire a budget bodyguard (Owen Wilson) to protect them from a psychotic bully. Homeless and a bit of a dirtball, Drillbit eventually teaches the kids a thing or two about standing up for yourself, and they in turn enlighten him to the redemptive powers of honesty. Pretty standard stuff, but the acting is good, the jokes are funny, and the film has an underlying sweetness all too uncommon these days. Also starring Nate Hartley and Troy Gentile. Directed by Steven Brill.
VANTAGE POINT: The assassination of an American president is examined from multiple angles in this fast-paced thriller whose gimmicky narrative helps disguise the foolishness at its center. Still, audiences looking for rapid-fire thrills could do worse. Starring Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker and Sigourney Weaver. Directed by Pete Travis.
MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS: Norah Jones plays a brokenhearted New Yorker who sets out on a road trip across America after a bad breakup. My Blueberry Nights should have played like a memory, but its hard-living, luckless losers are too beautiful to be believed. Also starring Jude Law, Natalie Portman and David Strathairn. Directed by Wong Kar Wai.
