For this year's Conversation With a Living Legend, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center can save the airfare it has spent to fly in past speakers like Margaret Thatcher, Henry Kissinger and Arnold Palmer.

Luncheon chairman Allie Beth Allman has secured former first lady Laura Bush to be the star of the luncheon Sept. 18 at the Hilton Anatole. Assuming no detours, Bush can make it from her Preston Hollow house to the Anatole for about $2.50 in gas – call it $5 if the Secret Service brings a separate car.

This will make a trifecta for the Bush family. In the luncheon's 20-year history, Barbara Bush and George H.W. Bush have also been speakers.

The annual Dallas benefit for Houston's University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has raised nearly $10 million for cancer research and patient care.

Julianne in Grapevine

Before performing on Saturday's bill at the new Cowboys Stadium, singer and two-time Dancing With the Stars winner Julianne Hough put in an appearance in Grapevine.

Park Place Lexus in Grapevine hosted the come-hither 20-year-old as part of its sponsorship of the Texas Music Project, a nonprofit supporting music education in schools.

Julianne came to hear three young students perform.

The Texas Music Project appointed her an honorary ambassador for Texas music education.

Adams in the house

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams traveled light for his acoustic show at the Majestic Theatre. No heavy equipment to load and unload.

The man who penned "Summer of '69" and "Cuts Like a Knife" was spotted hanging out at the Stoneleigh Hotel, his Dallas HQ.

Getting serious

The new People magazine weighs in on the A-Rod-Kate Hudson romance that broke into view last week in Dallas.

"It's somewhat serious," says a magazine source. "He introduced her to a bunch of his friends."

The big league

On Tuesday, members of the Junior League of Dallas will be able to look down on all the little people. That's because they'll be 50 stories in the air for a party to announce the theme and entertainment for the Junior League Ball.

The announcement soiree will be at Wolfgang Puck's restaurant atop Reunion Tower, Five Sixty.
