Celine Dion at AAC
12:00 AM CST on Friday, January 2, 2009
Give Celine Dion credit for reinvention. With 2007's Taking Chances, the Canadian vocalist best-known for grandiose love ballads veered in a looser, more organic direction while tackling contemporary tunes by hot songwriters such as Ne-Yo, Linda Perry, The-Dream and Kara DioGuardi. The disc, which has been certified for 1 million copies shipped in the United States, isn't that novel for the artist, who has dabbled in pop-dance, R&B and even rock before. But she does toy with world-pop, bluesy rock and gospel. Does any of this ultimately matter? Maybe not. Dion will always be best-known for her armored truck full of love songs. Think about monster hits such as "Because You Loved Me," "My Heart Will Go On," "The Power of Love" and "If You Asked Me To." Mainstream pop radio has largely ignored her since 2002. She's no longer hip enough for those airwaves. But her current tour is a success. It promotes Taking Chances, and it's also her first trek since the closing of her "A New Day" show in Las Vegas, which ran for 723 sold-out performances.
