Sizzling sounds for summer
03:28 PM CDT on Friday, June 2, 2006
The summer concert season can be overwhelming, but fear not: Two of Quick's music fans, Hunter Hauk and Jessica Burgess, offer their riffs on the acts coming to town. A roundup of free outdoor concerts Hunter: Blackalicious can hype up a crowd with the greatest of ease. And the Roots? No introduction necessary. Jessica: Actually, I would appreciate an introduction to the Roots – I don't believe we've met. Details: Thursday at the Gypsy Tea Room's Ballroom. $15. Front Gate Tickets. Hunter: After hearing the Asylum Street Spankers' bluegrass rendition of "Closer," which included sheep sounds, it might be hard to see Trent Reznor and company perform it without snickering. Jessica: NIN takes me back to when I was an angsty high-schooler, wearing flannel shirts ordered from Land's End. Details: Saturday at Smirnoff Music Centre. $23.75-$58.75. Ticketmaster. Hunter: The British are coming! And they are being chased by rabid music critics! Jessica: I don't think there's any such thing as arctic monkeys. Seems like it would be a little cold for them. This is why even bands need good copy editors. Details: Tuesday at the Granada Theater. $20. Front Gate Tickets. Hunter: If I told you I hadn't danced geekily to "Boyfriend" in my living room more than four times, I'd be a very wise but dishonest man. Jessica: I will be bringing binoculars to this show, to inspect the alleged nose job. Details: June 17 at Smirnoff Music Centre. $28.75-$48.75. Ticketmaster. Hunter: Now that she's removed the Lance Armstrong ball and chain, she can continue her Tour de Cheez. Jessica: Wonder if she's still got that LIVESTRONG guitar. Probably not. Sigh. Details: June 20 at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie. $39.50-$69.50. Ticketmaster. Hunter: Will it be the down-in-the-dumps, "Lonesome Tears" Beck or funky rapping nerd with a frog in his throat? Probably a little of both. Jessica: I hope it's wants-to-hang-out-with-Jessica Beck! Details: June 21 at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie. $39.50. Ticketmaster. Hunter: Are you ready for a new sensation? It's called nausea. I kid – the new guy in INXS ain't so bad, but that's because he sounds exactly like Michael Hutchence. Jessica: INXS has gained some real legitimacy from having been on TV, so this will be a great show. Details: June 29 at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie. $35-$69. Ticketmaster. Hunter: We loved Extraordinary Machine both times it was released. See ya in the front row. Jessica: I've been a bad, bad girl. Just thought you might like to know. Details: July 8 at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie. $35-$59. Ticketmaster. Hunter: For God's sake, get a room. No one wants to see that. Jessica: Wait – actually I would like to see that. Let me get out my binoculars again. Details: July 21 at American Airlines Center. $35-$85. Ticketmaster. Hunter: Ah, how I long for the days of college, when I frequently tripped over drunken frat boys while trying to get back from the beer stand before the end of "Satellite." Jessica: I was still wearing those Land's End flannels back in Dave's heyday. Ah, sweet plaid nostalgia. Details: Aug. 19 at Smirnoff Music Centre. $40-$59.50. Ticketmaster.
