1939: Frank Sinatra made his first record, singing "From the Bottom of My Heart" and "Melancholy Mood" with the Harry James Orchestra.

1956: Dick Clark debuted as host of Bandstand on a Philadelphia TV station. The name was changed to American Bandstand when it moved to ABC.

1964: The Supremes released their first hit, "Where Did Our Love Go."

1968: Guitarist Eric Clapton announced the breakup of Cream. The band played a farewell concert later in the year.

1972: The State Department criticized Jane Fonda for making anti-war radio broadcasts in Hanoi, Vietnam.

1979: A Chicago disc jockey held a "disco demolition" between games of a baseball doubleheader at Comiskey Park. The second game was called off because of damage to the field.

1985: Playboy and Penthouse magazines went on sale with nude photos of Madonna.

1990: The movie Ghost was released.

1995: The Grateful Dead played its last concert with Jerry Garcia, at Chicago's Soldier Field.
