1926: Jazz trumpeter and innovator Miles Davis is born in Alton, Ill.

1945: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall are married in a three-minute ceremony.

1963: Stevie Wonder records "Fingertips, Part Two" live in Chicago. It became his first No. 1 hit, at age 13.

1967: Jimi Hendrix signs his first U.S. recording contract, with Reprise Records.

1978: The debut album of Van Halen goes gold in the U.S.

1992: Johnny Carson hosts his last Tonight show. There are no guests. Carson shows favorite clips from past shows.

1995: Connie Chung is fired as co-anchor of the CBS Evening News.

2006: Taylor Hicks beats out Katharine McPhee to win the fifth season of American Idol.
