TV: Best bets for Friday
11:00 AM CDT on Friday, July 14, 2006
STARGATE SG-1 Goodies await fans of TV's longest-running sci-fi drama in this new season, including the addition of Claudia Black to the cast as the beautiful, versatile and not-quite-ethical Vala Mal Doran. And for those of you who think the show hasn't been the same since Richard Dean Anderson left, good news: He's coming back for a few episodes. (N/CC/TVPG) (1 hr.) (8 p.m. SCI-FI) WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU Come on, admit it: You wanted it to turn out this way. Holly and Vince (Amanda Bynes, Nick Zano) see Lauren (Leslie Grossman) kissing Val's (Jennie Garth) ex-fiancé, Rick (Ed Kerr), and try to keep Val from finding out. Val, however, has found solace with Vic (Dan Cortese) and decides not to sign the annulment papers after all. Wesley Jonathan also stars in "Ground-Turkey-Hog Day." (CC/HDTV/TVPG) (30 mins.) (7 p.m. Ch. 33) THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL One of the most intelligent science-fiction movies yet made, director Robert Wise's 1951 classic doubles as a cautionary tale about nuclear war. Michael Rennie is superb as a human-looking alien who lands in Washington, D.C., with his traveling companion: a metallic robot that can disintegrate weapons with its laser eyesight. (CC) (2 hrs.) (7 p.m. AMC) KYLE XY There's nothing wrong with a little cross-promotion between a network and its sister cable channel, especially if it gives extra exposure to a good show. This mystery series from ABC Family definitely qualifies. If you're just tuning in, it's the tale of a teen (Matt Dallas) of mysterious origins who's learning to be a real boy. (CC/HDTV/TV14) (1 hr.) (8 p.m. Ch. 8) LENO Actor David Hasselhoff; journalist Natalie Morales. (N/CC/TV14) HDTV (10:35 p.m. Ch. 5) LETTERMAN Journalist Anderson Cooper; comic John Witherspoon. (N/CC/TVPG) HDTV (1 hr. 2 mins.) (10:35 p.m. Ch. 11)
