Some veterans of foreign wars deeply resented a passage near the top of Jacquielynn Floyd's July 4 Metro column on patriotism. "If your article…were presented to a military tribunal your fate would, probably, be the firing squad," said Marty Nell, commander of VFW Post 4380 in Plano.

I hope many of you read the six-day kickoff to our "Bridging Dallas' North-South Gap" project. A special thanks to everyone who already has taken the time to offer feedback. (Please keep those e-mails coming to southerndallas
@dallasnews.com.) In addition to praise, we received a number of excellent questions and concerns from readers.

Nicolas Boyle of University Park writes to raise several questions about our coverage of the proposal to create a toll system on Mockingbird Lane. In general, he wondered whether we made too much of the story to foster an adversarial atmosphere between the Park Cities and Dallas. “First, the opening sentence of the June 5 article is patently false: ‘Highland Park’s solution to unclogging traffic on Mockingbird Lane: Make Dallas drivers pay for it.’ It is not a solution; it was never been [sic] discussed in either open forum or closed (for all we know); and even the most simple understanding of congestion pricing would tell you that tolling a road taxes everyone, not just Dallas drivers.”

Since we installed new security measures on our opinion blog and made comments appear automatically, we’ve seen the number of comments increase to more than 1,500 per month. If the trend continues, by the end of the year, we’ll receive more comments on our blog than letters to the editor.

Sifting through the Ask the Editor inbox: Reader Ashlee A. Matthews emailed us to object to Thomas Sowell's Viewpoints column last Friday. It was titled, "No turning back – If Iran gets bomb, that sobering fact makes the presidential vote easier." In it, the Hoover Institution senior fellow explains why he believes a vote for John McCain over Barack Obama for president should be a "no-brainer."

Gary Moer writes to ask whether we can do a story wrapping up all the areas in the United States that are off-limits to oil drilling. “Just last Friday while I was in a Plano convenience store, I saw a lady begging for money to put gas in her car,” he says. “I was in a nice part of Plano. How much more of this are we going to see, because we won’t develop our own resources?”

Loyal reader Michael, a self-described fan of Points, telephoned May 22 and urged us to reprint Tom Friedman’s May 18 column in The New York Times titled, “Obama and the Jews.” He said the column was important in that it dispelled the myth that Barack Obama was a secret Muslim and that he was eager for TDMN to share that information with its readers.

Regarding the Miley Cyrus photo mini-scandal, John Olthoff writes to chide us for participating in the sort of publicity spectacle that keeps the cash registers ringing in what he calls “Hollyweird.” “How is some media-created 15-year-old twit’s problems news,” he asks, “for those of us worried about gas prices, an upcoming presidential election and its affect on economy and many other things of importance?”

You can learn a lot about candidates by the way they fill out the questionnaires we provide them online. Sometimes what you learn is impressive – innovative ideas about addressing community challenges, a particularly interesting job they’ve held, how many languages they speak. Other times, what you learn is less impressive and more revealing.

James O’Hara writes to defend the Dallas Stars. “I’m not very happy with the five predictions your sports ‘experts’ made when the first round opponents were established. They all said the Ducks would win in 5 or 6 games. Why would they vote against a Dallas team? Obviously, they don’t know what they are talking about as the Stars won in 6. I expect better prediction going forward in the series or better sports writers.”
