Christmas Eve is usually a huge day for grocery stores as people realize they need supplies for cooking dinner on Christmas Day. Most stores have gift aisles and holiday food baskets available but won’t be open on Christmas Day (don’t forget a bottle of wine for the hostess).

For those who just can’t get motivated until Dec. 25, Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Walgreens are open on Christmas Day.

Walgreens' cosmetics aisles carry designer fragrances from Hugo Boss, Nautica, Burberry and Baby Phat. The office-supply aisle has memory cards, and this time of year, the store beefs up its toy department. Walgreens also has an "as seen on TV" section where shoppers can find current favorites, such as Pedi Paws and Pasta n’ More, and a few classics, including Chia Pet and the Clapper.

Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc. admits it may not be “a mammoth mass merchandise retailer,” but it, too, offers a surprising number of last-minute gifts, said Kevin Elliot, senior vice president for merchandising, logistics and marketing. Stores sell gift cards for a decent number of other stores and restaurants, as well as video games, pre-paid wireless cards and, of course, lottery tickets, which Mr. Elliott said are great stocking-stuffers.

A new item at 7-Eleven stores this year is the 7-inch Nextar digital picture frame at $49.99. Stores also offer a Royal 1-inch keychain picture frame for $15.99 and a few holiday DVD titles.

Speaking of DVDs, DVD players and movie-related merchandise, Dallas-based Blockbuster Inc. can fill small and big last-minute gift requests. It’s selling a PlayStation2 and Guitar Hero bundle for $179.99. A Sylvania Blu-ray DVD player is $199.99 and comes with four free movie rentals.
