The Men Who Stare At Goats (R)
Overture Films

The Men Who Stare At Goats is a major disappointment considering the all-star cast and book on which its based on.

A Christmas Carol (PG)
"A Christmas Carol" is a sometimes beautiful, sometimes scary, re-telling of the classic Dickens story of greed and redemption.

The Fourth Kind (PG-13)

The Fourth Kind is a terribly-made movie about a creepy, fascinating subject.

This Is It (PG)
This Is It
Sony Pictures

"This Is It" is a knock-out of a film, and a wonderful cinematic surprise documenting the final days of rehearsal for Michael Jackson's elaborate comeback tour.

10/22/2009

Amelia (PG)
"Amelia" is a beautifully photographed film but it's also emotionally disappointing. It's a two-hour puff-piece about a legendary figure in aviation, produced by and starring Hilary Swank.

10/15/2009

Where the Wild Things Are (PG)
Warner Brothers

A popular children's book about a sad boy and an island full of creatures has been turned into a movie. Where the Wild Things Are is both beautiful and troubling.

10/01/2009

The Invention Of Lying (PG-13)
Warner Brothers

"The Invention Of Lying" is an uneven film that starts off great and then quickly falls apart. Ricky Gervais stars as Mark, a man living in a world where no one lies and everyone always speaks the blunt truth - that is until Mark tells the very first lie.

Capitalism: A Love Story (R)

Michael Moore loves to stir the political pot, and he's done it again with "Capitalism: A Love Story," using humor, history, and testimonials to condemn our current economic system, specifically banks and Wall Street.

Toy Story 1 and 2 in 3D

Grab your kids and run to the theatre to revisit both Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 - wonderful films that have been re-mastered in 3D.

Big Fan (R)
Handout.
Big Fan is rated a strong R for language and is not to be taken lightly.

Big Fan is a well-made, tightly-wound, sports-minded melodrama starring Patton Oswalt as Paul, a middle-aged parking garage attendant, who lives with his mother and is the ultimate New York Giants football fan. He is also a Cowboys and Eagles hater, with no social life except for tailgating, and calling sports talk radio shows.

It Might Get Loud (PG)
Sony Pictures Classics
What you learn by watching this extraordinary film is a sense of rock and roll history.

It Might Get Loud is a magical documentary about the love of playing electric guitar, featuring Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, The Edge from U2 and Jack White from White Stripes. They are three different-styled players, gathering to explain how they do, what they do.

Extract (R)
Scene from Extract
Miramax

"Extract" is a funny, goofy little movie about a man in the process of making bad decisions — both at home and at work.

My One and Only (PG-13)

My One and Only is another period piece starring Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger as a wife and mother of two boys, who leaves her playboy husband behind and travels across country in search of a new and better husband.

All About Steve (PG-13)
Scene from All About Steve
Twentieth Century Fox

"All About Steve: is another strong contender for the worst film of the year, starring Sandra Bullock as a highly-strung crossword puzzle writer who stalks a handsome TV cameraman.

World's Greatest Dad (R)

World's Greatest Dad is by far the most disturbing movie of 2009 starring Robin Williams as a high school teacher and father to Kyle, played with a foul mouth and a mean spirit by Daryl Sabara.

Taking Woodstock (R)
Taking Woodstock
Focus Features

This cinematic mess is about 1969's world-famous music festival in upstate New York. One problem: IT HAS NO MUSIC.

Thirst (R) ... and other foreign vampires
scene from Thirst
Focus Features

"Thirst," opening this week, is a violent, thrilling, well-made, first-rate, foreign-language vampire movie from South Korea.

08/20/2009

Inglourious Basterds (R)
Scene from Inglourious Basterds
The Weinstein Company

"Inglourious Basterds" is wild, violent, irreverent, scary, wickedly-funny and everything I expected from writer-director Quentin Tarantino.

Cold Souls (PG-13)
Scene from Cold Souls
Samuel Goldwyn Films

"Cold Souls" is a funny, enlightened, odd little movie starring Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti as himself.

08/13/2009

District 9 (R)
Sony Pictures Entertainment
District 9 is written and directed with a sure intelligent hand by Neill Blomkamp.

District 9 is an intense, thrilling, fascinating new film, and for the sci-fi genre, it's part-time ground breaking.

Adam (PG-13)

Adam is a good little movie about an unusual romance, starring Rose Byrne as the single girl and Hugh Dancy, as the boy she likes, living in the same building.

The Time Traveler's Wife (PG-13)

The Time Traveler's Wife is one of the worst films I have seen all year.

08/06/2009

Julie & Julia (PG-13)
Handout.
Julie & Julia is written and directed by Nora Ephron - this is her best film in years.

Julie & Julia is a delightful, thoughtful, well-made film about two women and their connection to food and each other. The legendary Julia Child is played Oscar-caliber in the 1960s by Meryl Streep. Writer-blogger, Julie Powell, who attempted in the 90s to make all of Child's 524 French recipes in one calendar year, is played by Amy Adams.

Paper Heart (PG-13)

Paper Heart is a peculiar, entertaining documentary starring the very shy stand-up comic, Charlyne Yi, and her efforts to find love in her life.

G.I. Joe (PG-13)

The studios refused to screen G.I. Joe in advance for critics, and that is never a good sign.

07/23/2009

G-Force (PG)
Handout
G-Force is rated PG because it's filled with endless amounts of bathroom humor.

I've seen G-Force and lived to tell about it. It's a 90-minute assault on the senses about highly-trained guinea pigs, trying to stop a maniacal billionaire from taking over the world.

07/15/2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG)
Courtesy of Warner Bros.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is perfectly directed by David Yates.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth in the Harry Potter film series. It's also the most beautiful and most thoughtful.

07/16/2009

(500) Days of Summer (PG-13)
Handout.
(500) Days of Summer is smartly directed by Marc Webb.

Run to the theatre to see (500) Days Of Summer, an entertaining, enlightened look at modern day romance, told through the eyes of Tom, played-well by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
