Public Enemies (R)

Public Enemies is a good solid film but never great. Johnny Depp gives another strong performance as the depression-era gangster, John Dillinger. A tommy gun-toting, smooth-talking bank robber, pursued by the feds and not afraid to shoot.

Moon (R)

Moon is a smart and fascinating new sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell as a man living and working by himself on the moon for three years.

Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs (PG)

Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs arrives in 3d and it's a silly, fun escape for parents and kids.

Winspear Opera House inspires wonder

The Winspear Opera House, currently under heavy construction, is expected to be the centerpiece of the Dallas Center For Performing Arts.

06/24/2009

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (PG-13)
Courtesy of Paramount Pictures
The film runs a long two and a half hours.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a long, elaborate, robot combat movie, and everyone is back, including Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, speaking some of the dumbest dialogue in movie history.

My Sister's Keeper (PG-13)
New Line Cinema

My Sister's Keeper might be the most depressing summer film ever released.

Whatever Works (PG-13)

Whatever Works is a wickedly funny adult comedy starring Larry David as a cynical, arrogant, New Yorker who befriends and then marries a southern runaway.

06/18/2009

Year One (PG-13‎)
Handout
Year One is filled with bodily function humor.

Year One is not a good film but it is part-time funny. Jack Black and Michael Cera play ancient hunters and gatherers, off on an adventure to discover their world, and along they way they run into two bickering brothers - Cain and Abel.

The Proposal (PG-13)

The Proposal is exactly what you think it is, and the same old story told with new faces.

Food, Inc. (PG)

Food, Inc. is a terrific documentary about the food we eat and where it comes from.

The Merry Gentleman (R)

The Merry Gentleman is a slow moving, sometimes frightening, and sometimes touching new film directed by and starring Michael Keaton.

06/11/2009

Away We Go (R)
Handout
Away We Go is directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes.

Away We Go is a beautiful, unusual, jewel of a film. Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski play a pregnant couple traveling around the United States visiting friends and relatives. Their mission? To find the right place to settle down and start a family. First Stop? Phoenix, to visit her offensive college room-mate, played by Allison Janney.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (R)

The Taking of Pelham 123 is a solid, exciting remake of an even better 1974 original. Oscar-winner Denzel Washington plays the New York City track man, working the lines one afternoon, when all of a sudden a group of bad guys, led by a menacing John Travolta, hi-jack a subway car filled with frightened passengers.

New Dallas theater 'unlike any other in world'
WFAA-TV
The new theater opens in October.

The new home of the Dallas Theater Center is a one-of-a-kind structure that can morph into different shapes for different productions.

06/04/2009

Land Of The Lost (PG-13)
Universal Pictures
Land of The Lost feels mostly lost.

Land Of The Lost is much more of a disappointment than it ever is funny. Even Will Ferrell seems a bit lost as Dr. Rick Marshall, screaming all the way into a time-warped alternate world of the past, present and future, and that includes an angry T-Rex.

My Life In Ruins (PG-13)

I hate to say it but My Life In Ruins is so poorly made, it's a bit shocking.

The Hangover (R)

Hide your babies and hold on to your decency - The Hangover is another raunchy, flat-out funny comedy about four men on a bachelor trip to Vegas, and wouldn't you know it, what happens to them in one night is simply shocking.

05/28/2009

Up (PG)
Handout.
Up often jumps off the screen.

Up is a brilliant, emotional, and wonderfully funny, new, animated film and the first in 3-D from Pixar.

Drag Me To Hell (PG-13)
WFAA-TV
Universal Studios.

Drag Me To Hell is a surprisingly good film, intentionally scary and intentionally funny.

05/20/2009

Terminator Salvation (PG-13)
Warner Bros.
"Terminator Salvation" suffers from the absence of a cohesive script.

Terminator Salvation is an overblown, big budget, blow-up movie and the lesser of the four Terminator films.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (PG)
Twentieth Century Fox

"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is terribly uneven, funny one minute and not so funny the next.

Every Little Step (PG-13)
Sony Pictures Classics

"Every Little Step" is an absolutely thrilling documentary about the creation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Chorus Line, and the behind-the-scenes casting process for the 2006 Broadway revival.

05/14/2009

Angels & Demons ( PG-13)
Handout.
The book is better than the film, says Gary.

Angels & Demons is only slightly better than The Da Vinci Code and as a film, that's not saying much.

Management (R)

Management is a quiet, quirky, low budget film starring Jennifer Aniston as a traveling saleswomen, staying in an Arizona roadside motel.

05/07/2009

Star Trek (PG-13)
Handout.
Every frame of J.J. Abrams dazzling new popcorn movie works, and it's deceptively smart.

Every frame of J.J. Abrams' dazzling new popcorn movie works, and it's deceptively smart. The film bends time at warp-speed; and features a screenload of well-planned special effects

Tyson (R)

Tyson is a riveting, fascinating, new documentary about the life and times of former heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson.

Valentino: The Last Emperor (PG-13)
Acolyte Films

"Valentino" is a terrific new documentary about the iconic 70-something Italian fashion designer, his couture clothes, his business world, his five pugs, and his 45-year relationship with his partner, Giancarlo Giammetti.

05/01/2009

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (PG-13)
Handout.
Wolverine is directed by Gavin Hood.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is much more violent, and more fast paced than the previous three films, and I think slightly better.

04/30/2009

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (PG-13)
Handout.
The film is a weird PG-13-rated combination of styles that is far from innocent.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is so bad, so misdirected, so out of touch, it makes Bride Wars look smart.

04/23/2009

Earth (G)
Disney Nature

Earth marks the welcome return of Disney in their effort to make nature films that appeal to all ages.

The Soloist (PG-13)
Handout.
The Soloist is based on a true story but has enormous trouble connecting.

The Soloist was supposed to come out last December for Oscar consideration, but is just now arriving and there's a reason: it's a mess.

Sugar (R)

Sugar is a good little movie from Sundance about a baseball pitcher from the Dominican Republic and his journey to play pro ball in America.

04/16/2009

State of Play (R)
Handout.
State of Play works best when it focuses on the current state of the news gathering business rather than Hollywood plot twists.

State of Play is better than expected but remains an uneven new thriller that only touches the surface of newspaper journalism and politics.

American Violet (PG)

Don't let American Violet sneak under your cinematic radar. This is a smart, fascinating, well-made piece of Texas political and racial history.

Paris 36 (PG-13)

Paris 36 is an energetic, entertaining, foreign language film from France that takes place in a rundown theatre in Paris in 1936.

Gigantic (R)

Gigantic is a good little quirky film starring Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel as two odd young adults who meet and have the strangest relationship.

AFI Dallas ends with celebration of Texas films at Victory Park
Handout.
The finale at Victory Park will celebrate Texas film-making.

AFI Dallas wraps up on Friday in grand Texas style, with a celebration of Texas-made movies and television shows, outdoors on the plaza at Victory Park.

AFI Dallas: The 2 Bobs

The 2 Bobs screens during prime time at AFI Dallas and it's a low-budget comedy made in Austin, from writer-director Tim McCanlies.

AFI Dallas: Big Fan

In the compelling new film called Big Fan, Patton Oswalt gives a pitch perfect performance as the ultimate New York Giants football fan, eventually attacked and beaten to near death by his favorite player, but never losing hope in his team.

03/31/2009

AFI Dallas Film Festival: 'Burning Plain,' 'Food Inc.'

Monday's AFI Dallas centerpiece screening was a good one, and a difficult one.

03/25/2009

Monsters vs. Aliens (PG)
Handout.
Monsters vs. Aliens is rated PG for a few rough words reaching both kids as well as adults.

Monsters vs. Aliens is the best non-Pixar animated film in years — it's that good.

12 Rounds (PG-13 )
Handout.
12 Rounds scrapes the bottom of the cinematic barrel.

From the mountain to the valley, 12 Rounds might be the worst film of 2009, starring former wrestler-turned-actor John Cena as a New Orleans cop fighting the good fight against an out-of-control villain. Cena is fine in the film but the writing and directing by Renny Harlin is a definite bottom feeder.

03/19/2009

Duplicity (PG-13 )

Duplicity might be the most boring big star movie in a long, long time. Julia Roberts and Clive Owen play corporate spies working on opposite sides of the boardroom but when they are not stealing secrets from each other, they share the same bedroom, and spend a lot of time arguing and making up.

I Love You, Man (R)

I Love You, Man is a funny, raunchy new comedy about male friendship. Paul Rudd is terrific as the awkward Peter Klaven, engaged-to-be-married but with no male friends.

03/12/2009

Race To Witch Mountain (PG)
Handout.
What's odd about this new Disney film is its infatuation with guns and violence.

Race To Witch Mountain is a below-average reinvention of the 1975 Disney classic, about two aliens with extraordinary powers, disguised as blonde children trying to get back to their planet.

Crossing Over (R)
Handout.
Crossing Over is written and directed without an ounce of subtlety by Wayne Kramer.

Crossing Over is an ambitious, heavy-handed look at immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles.
