Q: Perhaps I have the wrong target for complaint, but don't know where this belongs.  Channel 8 is our go-to network for many years but can't understand why in showing the West tragedy you would blur the sides of your picture transmission.  Is that artistic?  Cropping?  Narrows our focus and is distracting.  This is so petty and minor when compared to what our West neighbors are dealing with, but would help us to better understand what your news people are trying to show us.

A: That is a very good question. Much of the time we do this with user-generated cell phone video that was shot vertically rather than horizontally, in the 16 x 9 format of television sets. It helps fill the frame, and tends to focus the eye a bit more. When shooting cell phone video, please turn phones horizontally.
