Q: Who do you think you are putting on your own show over Modern Family? If it wasn't bad enough that you run your own ticker over the ABC News Good Morning America ticker every damn day, how you are over riding national programming for your own self-serving satisfaction. This is just another example of how awful Belo is and something needs to be done about your abuse of power.

Anne

A: Thank you for your email; we regret any inconvenience this preemption may have caused Anne. As an ABC affiliate our contract allows for a specific number of preemptions throughout the year to accommodate local specials such as our annual Texas-OU Pre game program, GMT After Dark, Big D NYE, and in this case, a series of programs about Children’s Medical Center, North Texas’ largest nonprofit pediatric hospital and the seventh largest such provider in the US called Children’s Med/Dallas.

It is the primary pediatric teaching facility for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and conducts critical research that is instrumental in developing treatments and therapies of pediatric diseases. Children’s has nearly half a million visits annually, and regardless of ability to pay for treatment, no one is turned away. It is one of the most significant institutions in our community however so many have never been beyond the walls; these specials truly take viewers into the lives of patients and doctors at Children’s that, before now, have never been made available.  The reviews and viewer comments have been very good, and we are proud to be able to air the series.

As for the GMA ticker, it is designed for affiliates such as WFAA to add local content, which is exactly what we do. You may know Modern Family is in the midst of summer re-runs. It is scheduled to return with new episodes this fall. Modern Family reruns have been seen probably at least twice by now, and are also available online at abc.go.com. This is to say that the programs preempted were carefully and thoughtfully selected.  Again, we regret that we caused any inconvenience for you, and certainly appreciate your candor moreover that you would take the time to write. We will share your comments with the programming department as well. Thank you for the comments. Have a good day.
