Q:  Don Hill is finally put in jail and now you run a story about getting his jail time reduced. What is wrong with you? Don't you want clean politician? Why feel sorry for an elected official that is a crook?

A:  Thank you for your email. The headline of the story is “Mom: Disgraced Dallas Councilman living in 'hell',” which was taken from the words of Mr. Hill’s mother. We are reporting a news story, which does not signal taking a position. When a journalist reports a story that does not mean he or she is making a judgment (to your point: “Why feel sorry for an elected official that is a crook?), or an endorsement. To be specific, here is what we reported:

“Don Hill is hopeful that a new petition — spearheaded by his mother — will catch the attention of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. So far, several hundred signatures have been collected, protesting his 18-year sentence as excessive. 5,000 signatures are needed. The petition is expected to be distributed to local churches and barber shops in the coming weeks.”
