Jason Whitely

Jason Whitely is a Senior News Reporter at WFAA-TV - joining Channel 8 in February 2008.

Based in the Dallas newsroom, he regularly develops his own story ideas for the 10:00 p.m. newscast. If you have an idea, email him at the address above.

Over his 20 year career, Jason has covered eight hurricanes including Katrina which crippled New Orleans. In addition, he traveled to Honduras with the Missouri National Guard as soldiers helped rebuild that Latin American country after the devastating strike by Hurricane Mitch.

Whitely has reported extensively on the American Airlines bankruptcy and the merger with US Airways, the collapse of Enron and ensuing criminal trial of its executives, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, Pope John Paul II’s visit to the U.S. in 1999, Mark McGwire’s record-setting season of homeruns, and immigration issues along the U.S. – Mexican border.

Jason has also witnessed three executions of prison inmates on Texas’ Death Row.

While working in Houston, Jason reported on the space shuttle program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. For several years, he regularly interviewed astronauts before and after their missions. He also piloted the space shuttle simulator which astronauts used to train.

Jason enjoys travelling having visited more than 165 cities in 17 countries on five continents.

His peers have honored him with 15 Emmy Awards, two Edward R. Murrow Awards and two dozen others from the Associated Press in Tennessee, Illinois, and Texas, along with the Houston Press Club, the Dallas Press Club, the Texas Medical Association, the Missouri Broadcasters Association, and the Tennessee School Boards Association.

In 2010, he won the Emmy for Best General Assignment Reporter. Five years earlier, he won the Emmy for Best News Reporter in Texas. In 2004, the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters named Jason - Reporter of the Year.

Whitely earned a B.A. in Political Science from Western Kentucky University.

Prior to coming to Dallas, Jason worked for more than a decade at two other BELO stations; KHOU-TV, Channel 11 in Houston, and KMOV-TV, Channel 4 in St. Louis. He started his career at WKRN-TV, Channel 2, in Nashville.
