Q: What fundamentally gives your life meaning?  Can you recount a turning point in your life that made this purpose clear to you?
A: My family. I live to love them and grow together. The moment I was sobbing holding our son for the first time, it was crystal clear.

Q: Is there a link to the story you did on Gary and Janis Newman? Those lovebirds happen to be my parents, and I am so proud of them. I want to make sure my brother in Lubbock can see it. Thanks for doing such a great story! Have a great day!

Q: I love all the clothes that you show and think my daughter would love them, but where on the WFAA website would I find them.  I have looked and looked.  I don't belong to facebook or anything but hotmail so can you please help so that I can e-mail them to her.
Thanks, and love watching you!!
A: I get my clothes everywhere and always on sale. I hit up Dillard’s a lot, also love Zara in the Galleria. There is no one place I shop, it’s all over the place!

Q: During your daily cross talk with Delkus, you said that you hadn’t watched the super bowl in years until last night’s game between the Giants and Patriots. Did you not watch last year’s game when it was played in our own backyard? Lord knows you and channel 8 along with all the other local stations spent way too much time covering it prior to kickoff.
A: Of course I watched it.  I was so sick last year with pneumonia, I didn’t see the entire thing. All the pre-coverage of standing outside in 12 degree’s got me sick!

Q: 2/7/12 you featured a vegan cookie made with garbanzo beans.  Where can I find the recipe?  Are there more recipes from the creative chef?
A: Look for the deep dish cookie pie, it’s in the blog. Her name is Chocolate Covered Katie. Here is the link: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/

Q: Can you explain? I sent this to the manager: I watched the story about the shooter who ran into the vent-a-hood facility with interest. The wide banner across the bottom of the screen blocks too much of the view! Now, Shelly is talking, it switched to the small logo to her right. Viewers want to SEE what you are reporting, rather than the wide banner blocking the view.
A: I totally understand your concern. We put up the banners so people can know information we don’t necessarily say. Like location, or dates, etc. But you are right sometimes it blocks the view. We don’t always know that until it happens, at which point the director of the show will remove it as fast as possible. We are aware of the issue.  Thanks for asking.

Q: On the 5:00 news tonight, 2/7/12, you did a newscast on the street with people sampling garbanzo bean cookies and then with John and Pete on the broadcast.  I would like the recipe, is it available??
A:
2 cans white beans or garbanzos (drained and rinsed) (500g total, once drained)
• 1 cup quick oats (or certified-gf quick oats)
• 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
• 3 T canola oil
• 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
• 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 and 1/2 cups brown sugar (You can sub evaporated cane juice or white sugar. EDIT: sugar-free version coming soon!! Be sure to check back!)
• 1 cup chocolate chips

Blend everything (except the chips) very well in a good food processor (not a blender). Mix in chips, and pour into an oiled pan (I used a 10-inch springform pan, but you can use a smaller pan if you want a really deep-dish pie.) Cook at 350F for around 35-40 minutes. Let stand at least 10 minutes before removing from the pan.

Q: Hello Shelly, I would like to know why does Pete get so close to the camera while giving his weather report? I'm afraid he's going to walk straight in to the camera one day. When he does this, it blocks a larger portion of the weather maps.
A: This is kind of funny. You are right, he walks in and out to stress his words. Funny thing is, he is REALLY far away from the camera actually! Several feet away, it just is zoomed in to make it look closer. So he may not realize it!

Q: Comment:  Shelly,   Do you ever listen to yourself and review your presentations ? I think it would be less irritating if you didn't talk about yourself so much. You pronounce the word didn't as didn’t which translates into did/ don't. The word is did/n't and should not be pronounced as did/d'nt. There is no double D in this word.
A: I do review the shows often, yes. We like to see what worked and what didn’t. Yes, we do talk about ourselves around weather chat times, because that is what people ask us for more often. Research shows most viewers want to know more about our lives, who we really are and what we are really like. Thanks for your thoughts on the word didn’t.  I’ll take it into consideration!

Q: Hey Shelly, What was the breeders name of those bulldog puppies that you had on the news tonight?
A: We don’t know the name of the breeder, but the puppies were found on the website wimp.com

Q: I am trying to find out what Tassimo coffee makers are being recalled is there a link or somewhere.
A: Yes, a big recall, here is an article.

Q: How do I view the video of Pete Delkus talking about his visit to Hawk Elem. in Denton on Friday, Feb. 10th?
A: I am sorry to say you can’t, it’s just a small bit of video. Only full stories make it online.

Q: Please ask Pete how he went from playing baseball to becoming interested in meteorology.
A:  I will ask him now, standby. The answer will likely be in the next round of Ask Shelly.

Q: Why is Dale Hansen against soccer?   He hardly mentions soccer games even when the USA teams win. Even  Joe Trahan barely mentioned the final score in the dramatic win by the USA women against New Zealand played in Frisco last Saturday.  Don't these sportscasters  owe the metroplex soccer fans to see some highlights?  After all the US women's team is the current Olympic Champion.
A: I know at 5pm recently we have covered women’s soccer. Dale doesn’t hate soccer. I will nudge him about this, promise.

Q: Hello Shelly! I have just about given up trying to get my honeymoon cruise back that my husband and I lost because of medical reasons on my wedding day. All we requested from the cruise line was a later date for us to go, but they refused. We never asked for a refund, we just wanted to enjoy our honeymoon. We lost the money and the cruise itself. Your my last resort! What can we do?!
A: If you didn’t buy trip insurance this could be a tough one to fight. Have you tried sending a medical letter from your doctor?

Q: I saw Pete Delkus on Sunday doing the weather with Steve McCauley !  Does that mean he will be taking the rest of the month off ?
A: Pete won’t take any vacation for the next few months, actually, we are in severe weather season.
