A North Texas soldier has become the 2,000 U.S. military casualty in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon said Sgt. 1st Class Riley G. Stephens, 39, of Tolar, Texas, died Friday after being wounded by enemy small arms fire in Wardak province.

Stephens was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Tolar is located 43 miles southwest of Fort Worth in Hood County.
