WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Polish high court says that a regulation banning carriers of HIV from serving as police officers violates the nation's constitution.

The Constitutional Tribunal ruled Monday that a regulation issued by the interior minister in 1991 banning HIV-positive people from serving in the police violates equal rights guarantees.

The verdict also paves the way for the reinstatement of an HIV-positive officer who was fired from his job in 2006. The man challenged the firing in court, demanding to be reinstated.
