KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudanese state television says President Omar al-Bashir has returned to the country after undergoing surgery in Saudi Arabia.

State TV channels broadcast the Sudanese leader's return to the capital of Khartoum on Wednesday. Al-Bashir spent several days in the Saudi capital of Riyadh recuperating from what the Sudanese state news agency called a minor operation.

State media reported the Sudanese president was suffering from inflammation of the vocal cords.

Al-Bashir, 68, is Sudan's longest serving president since independence in 1958. He came to power in a 1989 military coup.

He has been indicted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide for his role in the war in the Sudanese region of Darfur.
