DALLAS (AP) -- A South African hospital says an American anthropology student attacked by chimps he was studying remains sedated after six hours of surgery to clean and stitch his wounds and deal with fractures and other injuries.

Andrew Oberle was talking to a tour group Thursday at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden when two chimps pulled him under a security fence. He was bitten and dragged nearly a half-mile.

The Mediclinic Nelspruit hospital said Monday that Oberle remains in intensive care.

Another graduate student at the University of Texas at San Antonio says Oberle knew primate research had risks. But after having volunteered at the Goodall institute in the past, the 26-year-old was eager to work with abused and orphaned chimpanzees and returning to the institute was a good opportunity.
