SAN ANTONIO -- Six-year-old April Nicole Soliz was struck and killed by an ice-cream truck in the 5000 block of Prairie Flower Dr., according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

The accident happened Thursday around 2:35 p.m. on the southwest side, near Old Pearsall Road.

Police said the truck driver was backing up when Soliz jumped on the back of the truck, slipped and fell. The truck rolled over the child and the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The ice-cream truck driver did not hear or see the girl, according to SAPD. A 10-year-old who was playing with the child alerted the driver of the accident.

April's grandmother, Deborah, didn't understand how the driver couldn't see the young girl, but police said it didn't appear to have been preventable.

"It seems like it's just a pure accident. Like I said, he was backing up, he says he wasn't able to see the little girl standing back there," Officer Rudy Lopez, with the San Antonio Police Department, said."Probably due to this wet weather too, she slipped off that bumper and under the truck."

No charges are expected against the driver, according to SAPD.
